~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nature's Calling! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Nature cures ~ not the physician."
-Hippocrates
This week, The Weekly Beet becomes one with nature to reveal its incredible healing effects. Mary Kent shares with you the top ten reasons why we could all benefit from a bit more nature.
Switch off your computer. Put the phone down. Turn off your iPod. Get up from your desk. Walk outside or take yourself to the park. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Open your eyes. Look at the sky, the trees, and the flowers. Take your shoes off and feel the Earth beneath your feet. Do you feel any better? Obviously, yes. So, what is it about this natural exercise that has the power to restore our mental, emotional, and physical body? Although the answer is still quite a mystery for most, people such as E. O. Wilson have hypothesized that human beings subconsciously seek a connection with nature, known as biophilia. One thing is for sure, nature is one of the most powerful healing tools known to man. By hypnotizing us with its beauty and perfection, nature can calm, ground, and heal the body, making daily stressors simply fade away. Research has even proven that exposure to nature can heal conditions such as depression, substance abuse, ADD and hyperactivity in children. And, that a lack of being in nature can result in Nature Deficit Disorder, a condition that affects the senses, resulting in a higher rate of physical and emotional illness.
So, why, if nature is the source of such well-being, do we live in a society where there is little time to enjoy it? Computers, cell phones, and TVs have taken our attention away from green grass, flowers, and trees. The Beet Girls say it's time to turn off your cell and hear nature's call! Here are the top 10 reasons why you should listen to what nature has to say:
- Nature is healing. Being in nature is the cheapest and most effective type of therapy.
- Nature provides oxygen. Breathing fresh air is essential to well-being.
- Nature is the perfect gym. Hiking, walking, and running in nature are great forms of exercise.
 - Nature is a temple. One can't experience nature without questioning creation.
- Nature awakens the senses. Experiencing the colors, smells, and sounds of nature heightens the senses.
- Nature provides relaxation. Spending time outdoors relaxes the mind. The many sounds of nature are incredibly relaxing.
- Nature provides sunlight. Sunlight allows the body to produce Vitamin D, which helps prevent osteoporosis, depression, and certain cancers. Also, sunlight is an essential remedy against jetlag.
- Nature helps you reconnect. Nature provides an environment where you can retreat and be alone.
- Nature makes you happy. Being in nature creates happiness within, increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
- Nature is romantic. Nature is the perfect setting for a romantic rendez-vous.
Listen to nature's call! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
