"Coconut Oil is the healthiest oil on Earth."
Dr. Bruce Fife, ND
Last week, The Weekly Beet went manic for organic! This week, The Beet Girls go coo-coo for Coconuts, reporting on the miraculous health benefits of this tasty tropical delight.
These days you don't have to holiday in the Pacific to enjoy the incredible health benefits of Coconuts. The Coconut, traditionally used in tropical countries as a source of beauty, health, and well-being, has been a well-kept secret for centuries. The big secret is there is so much you can do with a Coconut. You can eat it, you can drink it, you can wear it, and you can even cook with it! It's a meat, a milk, a juice, an oil, and now even a diet. Luckily, just about every health food store carries Coconuts and Coconut Oil. It's best to choose unrefined Virigin Coconut Oil for cooking, as this is the purest form. A few of our favorite brands include Spectrum, Garden of Life, and Nature's First Law. Once you discover what a Coconut can do, you, too, will go coo-coo over Coconuts.
Here's why The Beet Girls have gone CocoNUTS:
- Drinking the juice from a Young Coconut has been compared to receiving a blood transfusion.
- Adding Coconut Oil to the diet helps with weight loss as it supports thyroid function and metabolism.
- Cooking with Coconut Oil lowers the risk of a heart attack and does not affect cholesterol levels.
- Coconut oil prevents osteoporosis, as it increases the absorption of calcium and magnesium.
- Coconuts help with digestion and nutrient absorption.
- Coconut meat is high in Lauric Acid, which is anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal.
- Moisturizing with Coconut Butter prevents aging of the skin.
Unfortunately, the Coconut has undergone large scrutiny as it contains 92%saturated fat. But, as science is now proving, not all saturated fat is considered unhealthy. The Coconut is a healthier saturated fat (yes, there is such a thing), as it contains no trans fat. It does not affect cholesterol levels and actually helps people lose weight, not gain it. Cherie Calbom even wrote a book called The Coconut Diet, where she explains the essentials of incorporating Coconut Oil into the diet. Recently, Coconut Oil is being used in many scientific studies to prove its invaluable benefits on the immune system.
Although science has finally caught up with tropical tradition, The Beet Girls wonder if scientists and natives are aware that the Coconut can heal the Hiccups, too. While dining at a Thai restaurant in Notting Hill, Mary Kent recently discovered what holding your breath and standing on your head won't do! She gave Coconut Milk to a "hiccup-er" in great discomfort and those pesky little hiccups immediately disappeared. Now, that’s what we call an unBEETable discovery!
The Beet Girls say go CocoNUTS! It's time tobring the islands into your life. Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
