This week, The Weekly Beet reports from the crystal clear waters of the Turks & Caicos. Mary Kent makes a getaway, reporting on a few of her island favorites.
Located about 575 miles south of Miami in the British West Indies, the Turks & Caicos are an 8 island chain accompanied by many smaller cays. History tells us that the first known inhabitants of the islands were the Taino Indians and that many islanders claim their land as the first place that Columbus landed in 1492. Deeply embedded in pirate history from the 17th and 18th century, this string of islands is definitely a treasure worth visiting. My destination to report for The Beet took me 30 miles by boat to the famous COMO Shambhala retreat located at the exclusive Parrot Cay, where I have long dreamed of going.
Known as the relaxation haven to the stars, Parrot Cay and its spirtiual retreat, Shambahala, are among the most peaceful environments I have ever visited. Everything from the healthy food to the smiling staff really made my stay incredible. After one of the most delicious breakfasts and juice cocktails that included the juices of beet, passion fruit, mango, and papaya, I headed straight for a yoga class in the pavillion. From there I headed to meet the gorgeous Dr. Swati who moved from India to offer her services at Shambhala. She counseled me in the ways of Ayurvedic nutrition,
explaining the different doshas, or body types, of Vata, known as Vata, Pitta or Kapha. She explained the importance of balancing the six different tastes of bitter, pungent, astringent, salt, sweet, and sour in the diet. After a thorough questionnaire, Dr. Swati told me which dosha was needing attention and exactly what foods to eat in order to achieve balance. Dr. Swati is also trained in the practice of Reiki, so we shared much of our knowledge. An hour consultation turned into a two and a half hour discussion. She was so incredibly knowledgable that I left feeling soothed and utterly healed just by her presence. It is with such joy that I recommend a visit with her, as she is the most beautiful soul I have met in a long time! Afterwards, I relaxed in the infinity-edge pool and took a walk on the white sandy beach around the island.
While at Shambhala, I discovered the incredible healing products of Island Caribe. I was immediately drawn to the Sea Salt Glow exfoliator and my skin has never been the same. The Sea Salt Glow comes in Antigua Mango Cay, Turks & Caicos Beach, Citrus Sun, Jamaica Flora Lei, and Barbados Bloom. My favorite is Turks & Caicos Beach, of course! Originating in the Turks & Caicos, this yummy blend reflects the country's rich history of salt production. What's even better is that it contatins only the purest ingredients of West Indies cane sugar, coconut oils, and a selection of essential oils such as lavendar and ylang ylang. There is a hint of pineapple which will really remind you of an island experience in a jar!
A special thanks to Shambhala for such a wonderfully, holistic experience, but most importantly to Dr. Swati, whose wisdom and teachings were truly an enlightening experience. Namaste!
Enjoy your summer! I certainly am! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent
