This week, The Weekly Beet reports on the magical powers that lemons, cayenne, and maple syrup can have on the body. Mary Kent puts the Master Cleanse to the test, revealing the importance of such a naturally concocted detox!

Spring is a time for cleaning, cleansing, and of course, detoxing! It's a time of starting over, renewing the soul, and preparing for the hot summer days that lie ahead! It's a time of eating less, reviving energy, and strengthening immunity against pollen and pesky springtime colds. During the winter months, our body naturally puts on weight to keep warm, but as soon as the spring rolls around it's time to stimulate the kidneys, the liver, and that digestive tract in order to release winter stored weight. Created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, the Master Cleanse, otherwise known as the Lemon Aid Diet, is definitely one of the most controversial ways to shed that wintertime weight. Burroughs believed that simply mixing lemon juice, cayenne pepper, water, and maple syrup the body would provide a perfect balance of minerals to cleanse, eliminate, heal, and re-build the body to a total state of healthy perfection. The only kicker is that ten days are needed to receive optimal results from the Master Cleanse, which many health practitioners believe is a bit too long. This means over the course of ten days the only allowable food, which is more like a liquid, Master Elixir, is that of cayenne, lemon juice, maple syrup, and water. While it may seem impossible to go that long without food, advocates of the cleanse reveal that it is quite an adjustment in the beginning, but that every day gets easier and that every day brings an increase in weight loss and in energy, an alleviation of some chronic diseases, a decrease in acne, clearer vision, and the disappearance of dark circles under the eyes.

The majority of people are keen to do a cleanse/detox because they believe it will be a quick-fix to weight loss? Is the Master Cleanse really such a quick fix? Click here to read a bit more! Our answer is no, but it will definitely prepare the body for some major changes within. I did the cleanse for only two days and experienced a dramatic clarity in my complexion, an increase in my energy, a feeling of balance within, and a decrease in dark circles under my eyes. I do feel as if my wintertime weight, or should I say blues, went away. I wouldn't recommend going for the entire 10 days, so listen to what your body tells you. I listened to mine and went for two days drinking the magic, which ended up being the perfect time frame for me. Can't make the 10 day commitment either? Here's why everyone should at least try the Master Cleanse for a few! The Master Cleanse:
  • Dissolves and eliminates toxins and congestion in the body.

  • Cleanses the kidneys and the digestive system.

  • Purifies the glands and cells throughout the body.

  • Eliminates hardened material in the joints and muscles.

  • Relieves pressure and irritation in nerves, arteries, and blood vessels.

  • Eases addictions to sugar, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee, tea, cola, and drugs.

  • Keeps youth and elasticity of the skin.

Here's how to make the Master Cleanse concoction:

Combine the lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper in a glass filled with 10 oz. of water. Use organic lemons. Recommended amount is to drink 8-10 glasses per day and always when hungry! The drink will eliminate hunger pains right away.

So, how can this liquid Elixir really sustain people for 10 days? For starters, maple syrup contains balanced sugars, minerals, vitamins and amino acids which make it different from other sweeteners. It contains Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron, Copper, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Chlorine, Silicon, Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, Nicotinic acid, and Pantothenic Acid. There are 3 grades to Maple Syrup so make sure you get the Grade B which is the second run and contains the most minerals. And cayenne pepper? Click here to read the benefits of cayenne. And lemons? What's so great about them? Lemons are a loosening and cleansing agent and when combined with maple syrup create the following results:
  • Builds vitality.

  • Strengthens and energizes the heart, kidneys, and adrenals.

  • Activates the nervous system.

  • Strengthens the lungs.

  • Stimulates the brain for clearer thinking.

  • Alkalines the blood.

  • Cleanses blood plasma.

If you're going to try this cleanse, I definitely recommend getting Burroughs' book seen above. It's a quick read and will answer any questions you might have. Take a week where you can relax and nurture your body if you choose to do this cleanse. It's not for the faint-hearted, as any detoxing brings up unhealed aspects of the mental and emotional levels, not just physical. Buy your lemons ahead of time and definitely get a juicer. Give it a shot and let us know if you have anything unBeetable to report!

Lemon Aid to the rescue! It's time to do a cleanse! Don't miss a
Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Love,

Mary Kent
