"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow."

- Melody Beattie

This week, The Weekly Beet reports straight from the heart of a little Thanksgiving. Mary Kent gets her gratitude on, sharing what we all could stand to give a little bit more of this holiday season.

Recently, I had a maaaajor moment (a term I always said with my friend Elisa and what our family now says when we feel the presence of God all around, as our soul is touched with something so simple, yet so deeply profound). My father, who really should have been one of the Steven Spielbergs of the movie world because he is so divinely gifted with the camera, has my entire life on film, so the choice of which birthday, dance recital, or sporting event flashback I would like to see is always just the push of a button away. While flipping through selected scenes from 1989, I took a moment to zoom in at my geeking, pre-teen self opening lots of presents on my 15th birthday. It took me back to the days of the middle school, where my hair was permed and I sported a brace face. As I sat and watched, and I always get a little teary eyed when I watch things from the past, I really tuned in to something I found pretty interesting. After opening a Hello Kitty bag filled with glittery, little mechanical pencils with stars studded all over them, I heard myself say in the longest and most drawn out of southern voices "Oh my goooosh, thaaaank you soooo muuuuuuch" and stare at the pencils in a way that looked like I was receiving my first Oscar. The expression on my face was so genuinely full of light and I was so blown away by the tone of my voice that I replayed it five times. Nineteen years later and from the other side of the television, I sat literally feeling the high energetic vibrations of me being so uber-grateful over such a simple gift. With gratitude seeping through the television waves, the sincerity and heart felt thanks I saw all over my face completely reawakened a part of me that at the time I believe gratitude lay soundly sleeping. In that very moment, I felt God tapping me ever so lightly and whispering, 'Just be grateful for whatever it is that is happening to you, right here, right now in this very moment. No matter the situation." Smiling right then and there, I vowed my best to remember that gratitude, while such a simple act, is one of the most powerful feelings we can incorporate into our beingness on this planet. I will always remember that cute little, teen queen, and am grateful she helped me come up with the topic for this week's Beet of incorporating gratitude into our daily lives.

So, what exactly does it mean to practice the act of gratitude? To me, I think it simply means being mindful and aware enough to apply thanks in as many aspects of our lives as possible. When we begin to activate more thanksgiving in our lives and become grateful for not just what we have and do, but also for what is occurring to get us to where we are going, our lives become circulated with a never-ending flow of goodness. It truly is a secret to getting what we desire. Gratitude became the blockbuster self-help theme of The Secret, which got everyone excited to apply a bit ofgratitidue power as the antedote to manifesting. However, I would like to think that most of us have been practicing the art of saying thank you alot longer, whether we realized it's ability to bring us exactly what we wanted or not.

Gratitude is a streamless flow of never-ending appreciation that if we keep pouring forth does ultimately bring nothing but goodness back to us. It's a karmically charged action that does work the minute we start appreciating. Makes you definitely want to remember to say thanks, right? But, what happens when we get stuck in situations that bring us down and start testing this thing called gratitude? My advice is to get really still and listen to the part of yourself that knows nothing but love. Do whatever it is to remember that there is something good there to be grateful for. I don't care how bad the situation appears to be, there is absolutely something there to jump up and down and be happy about. I seriously know this well, so I can attest to it. God works in mysterious ways and as long as you are gratefully open to receiving the highest learning and are able to put your own thinking aside, you will learn something amazing. Maybe your cheating boyfriend will lead you to the true love of your life. Perhaps, the traffic jam gave you the perfect moment to jam out to the funnest tunes ever! Or, maybe your getting laid off was just the ticket to the freedom that you were secretly desiring all along, but too afraid to go out and get. It's there. Just trust and look for it. I'm the queen of forgetting, so as I type I'm remembering too. We all have to. It's our responsibility. So, here are my top 5 things we can all do to help us remember to incorporate the art of gratitude into our daily lives:
  1. Get a journal or a notebook. To get the habit started, for the next 30 days, plan to write down every day at least 5 things you are grateful for. Also, there is the cutest application for your iPhone called The Gratitude Journal. I LOVE IT!!!!
  2. Remember that all situations no matter how horrible they seem are to be thanked fully and whole-heartedly because there ARE seriously valuable lessons to be learned. Just trust this and know that you can be grateful in the midst of seriously challenging experiences. YOU are in control of your experience.

  3. Get some super cute stationary and start sending thank you notes to people who have done fabulous things for you. I have always done this, but recently got more into the habit. It really is so much fun.

  4. Create a Gratitude Board. On one side of the poster board cut out all of the things you love and are grateful for. Include inspiring quotes and photos that lift your vibrations and make you happy. On the other side, glue clippings of the things you want to have or achieve in the future. This way you position yourself for the incoming flow of good things to come.

  5. Gregg Krech, author of "Naikan: Gratitude, Grace, and the Japanese Art of Self Reflection," and co-founder of the ToDo Institutesays to ask yourself these three questions every
day: "What have I received today? What have I given? What trouble have I caused?"

I wanted a bit more gratitude, so I went straight to two sisters, Alison and Hollis the creators of an incredible company called WaterMeWell. These girls definitely know a thing or two about getting your gratitude on! They have incorporated the act of gratitude right into the core of WaterMeWell's
business model and based their products on love and gratitude, which I find simply divine! Here's what they had to say:

LOVE is "yin" and GRATITUDE is "yang". The two go hand in hand. Breathing in is oxygen (love), while breathing out is CO2 (gratitude). Just as carbon dioxide is the result ofoxygen intake, gratitude is the reply to love. It is given freely, with love as its transporter. As with everything else, gratitude does not exist separately from love; it is all one. We incorporate gratitude into our company through our understanding that WaterMeWell is an entity in and of itself. It provides us with so much love in who we meet as our customers, suppliers, and vendors that it is completely natural to give back to her our heartfelt gratitude for the way in which she expands our lives. As our WMW mantra says, we believe in love and have gratitude, which brings us peace and joy in our lives. Gratitude and love are literally in the fabric of our offerings, as we bless each piece of WaterMeWell with these vibrations. The Weekly Beet gives much gratitude to these girls! Thank you! Thank you! I love my gratitude tank top!

Happy Thanksgiving! It's time to get your gratitude on! Come on now! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
