~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Beet of Paris Part Un ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh la la! This week, The Weekly Beet reports from the streets of Paris. Before we give you the Beet of Paris, we must comment on our travel experience to the City of Light.
As we all know, traveling is filled with many unpleasantries! Whether it's a flight delay, a noisy neighbor, or a bump of turbulence, The Beet recommends always traveling prepared! To ward off bad airline food, we packed a snack bag filled with lots of fruit, a protein bar by Kashi, little boxes of apple juice by Knudsen, and a small bag of Garden of Eatin's tortilla chips. To ward off jitters and fatigue from flying, we took along one of Dragonfly Wellness' kits. The kits are filled with teas, oils, and our absolute favorite, Rescue Remedy. These days, one just can't fly without Rescue Remedy. One thing we totally forgot was to pack something to ward off the woes of a lost bag!!! We certainly didn't think to put a change of clothes in our carry-on bag. We are not sure if it was thanks to the Rescue Remedy in Dragonfly Wellness' kit or to the L'Occitane products found in Delta's complimentary travel kit, but we were calm, cool, and collective when we found out our baggage had been lost. Though our bag was finally recovered, we have to report that the only thing Delta has going for them is using L'Occitane products in their travel kits. Their lotions are filled with lavender to help soothe the spirit of any traveler. And, their soaps and creams are made of natural ingredients like shea butter, which leaves the skin soft and moist after a long, dehydrating flight.
Now, back to the healthy essentials we have uncovered in our extensive travels to Paris. Whoever said you had to live on foie gras, fromage, baguette, and vin rouge while in Paris was greatly mistaken! This city is filled with many treasures just waiting to be discovered by healthy readers like you! We have been visiting many of these places for years and feel it absolutely important to pass along the word. As soon as we got to Paris, we headed directly for the 6th arrondissement and instead of opting for a croque monsieur or a pain au chocolat at Les Deux Magots, we paid a visit to Guenmaï for a jus de pomme, carrot, et gingembre and a bite to eat. Guenmaï is a small health food store with a restaurant attached serving macrobiotic food. We recommend anything on the menu. It's super healthy and definitely a change from the norm. After eating there you can do un peu de shopping in the surrounding, hip area. Guenmaï is located at 2, bis Rue De L'Abbaye. Tel: 01 43 26 03 24
We visited our favorite Parisian Whole Foods "look alike" called Les Nouveaux Robinson. We have been going there for years and each time we go back we feel totally at home. The aisles are stocked with shelves of healthy foods and there is even a bulk section where you can buy grains, lentils, nuts, seeds, and beans. It's like being in Whole Foods, but everyone speaks french. hee hee Les Nouveaux Robinson has three locations in Paris all located in the banlieu (suburbs). So, you will have to take the métro or the RER. It's a quick trip and a definite must for the healthy traveler.
We must confess that we always visit a few three star restaurants during our stay in Paris. This year we went to Le Cinq at The George V Hotel. Everything was absolutely exquisite. At the end of me meal instead of coffee(because we never drink coffee) we chose a verveine tea (verbena) which is especially soothing to the digestive track after a rather intense meal. While sipping on our tea, we noticed the garcon bringing out electric blue glasses. At first we thought they were for a digestif, but when he came around with an unusual clear, glass bottle we thought otherwise. Being of curious minds, we asked about the water. He immediately replied in his French mannerism, "C'est tres bon pour le corps." (It is very good for the body.) You can only imagine how that got our attention! We found out that the mysterious healing water is called Wattwiller (which rhymes with the ferocious Rottweiler). We were told that this particular water contains no nitrates, has high levels of calcium and magnesium, and is excellent for pregnant women and people on a no-salt diet. After Le Cinq, we came home and found Wattwiller on the net. Click here to read more. We can honestly say, we felt amazing after we left Le Cinq. Whether it was the water or the foie gras, we are not quite sure! But, what we do know is this: you learn something healthy every day, even at a three star restaurant in Paris.
Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week as we continue our report from the streets Paris.
Au revoir et gros bisou.
