The Beet of Los Angeles

This week The Weekly Beet headed west to report from the city of angels, Los Angeles. A city so reknowned for its movies, its stars, and its glamour, and yet so little known for its mind, its body, and its spirit! The Weekly Beet uncovers a few gems that we definitely think you should check out!!

Our first stop was Real Food Daily, LA's most famous organic restaurant. With 3 locations, Real Food Daily knows just how to keep LA's residents super healthy!! We can truly attest that the food is really quite delicious! We think the restaurant's philosophy is pretty unBEETable:

  • MADE FROM: fresh vegetables, whole grains, legumes, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits, natural condiments, sea vegetables and soy products, grown by local farmers certified to be using organic farming methods!

  • COOKED IN: fine European stainless steel cookware with water that's been filtered, softened, and purified through reverse osmosis. We don't even own a microwave.

  • BALANCED WITH: Oriental health philosophies and heart-healthy western nutrition recommendations.

  • FREE OF: all animal products, dairy, eggs, butter, cholesterol, and saturated fats, as well as refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, white flours, preservatives or pesticides.

  • NATURALLY: low in fat, has a hearty protein base and is high in fiber. We use sea salt and high quality mono-unsaturated oils only occasionally & sparingly. Fresh herbs & spices add a variety of gourmet flavors.

  • MADE FRESH: by hand, right here in our kitchen.

  • Our second stop was the infamous, Bodhi Tree Bookstore located at 8585 Melrose Avenue. Named after the "tree of enlightenment," the bookstore carries all types of books from spiritual wisdom to nutrition. It's been around since 1970, healing the minds and spirits of LA's residents. Their book selection is absolutely unBEETable, as is their offerings of classes and book signings. There is always something going on at The Bodhi Tree Bookstore. Click here to find out!

Right down the street from The Bodhi Tree Bookstore is Elixir. We popped in to browse a bit and to sample a few teas. There is the most beautiful place in Elixir to sit and have a cup of tea. The entire list of teas is pretty impressive. Elixir even has an "in house" chinese medicine practioner who looks at your tongue and feels your pulse, to then recommend a few supplements. We found out that we were too yang, meaning full of heat! Very interesting!!!

We stopped by Silverlake's best Bikram Yoga Studio, located at 3223 Glendale Blvd., to try a class. If you have never tried Bikram Yoga we highly recommend it!! What an unBEETable workout. Click here to find out more about Bikram.

Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

    Love,

    Mary Kent
