~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can The Corn At The Movies! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week, The Weekly Beet reported on why cooking dinner is not only healthy, but also therapeutic. This week, Mary Kent & Elisa go to Hollywood to uncover the secrets of sneaking health into the movies!
Are you unable to go to the movies without buying a large tub of Popcorn and a liter of Coke? If so, you are not alone, as the average American eats 68 quarts of Popcorn a year, thus generating sales of Popcorn that exceed $15 billion. If you think eating that much Popcorn will make you look like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, we say think again! Everyone knows Popcorn comes from corn, but only few people know that corn is actually a grain, containing large amounts of natural sugars. Corn is NOT a vegetable and less healthy than you may think. Even the early Native Americans, whose diet consisted of corn, suffered largely from Anemia, Dental Cavities, and Osteoporosis. One large Popcorn has roughly 80 grams of fat, add 50 more when topped with butter. This is the equivalent of eight Big Macs! Now, that's what we call far from unBEETable. Luckily, in some countries like the UK, movie theatres have realized the value of air-popped Popcorn, as opposed to Popcorn popped in unhealthy vegetable oils. If you're having a Popcorn craving, at least make it air-popped without butter or salt!
Surely your salty Popcorn will demand balance with something sweet. It's no wonder the average American drinks an estimated 56 gallons of soft drinks per year! The effects of soft drinking are known to be hard-core on the body. Few are aware that corn pops up in your drink too! High fructose corn syrup, the main ingredient in Coca-Cola and most soft-drinks, is extremely processed from corn. If you choose Coke over Water, The Beet Girls say wake up. It's time to go Eau Naturelle and welcome water into your life!
We say save your wallet, your waistline, and your white teeth. The next time you go to see Harry Potter and his latest adventures, keep that corn on the cob and sneak a few of our healthy snacks into the movies:
Munch healthy at the movies! Can the corn and your soft drink too. Orville Redenbacher won't approve, but The Beet Girls certainly will. Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.
Love,
Mary Kent & Elisa
