Can You Feel The Beet?

Special thanks to Maroon 5's Jesse Carmichael & James Valentine for being simply unBEETable!

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination, and life to everything."

- Plato

Over the next two weeks, The Weekly Beet takes you on a journey through the healing sound of music. This week, Mary Kent brings music to your ears, showing you just how powerful it can actually be.

Long before the days of ABBA and Prince, Aristotle and Plato had already recognized the healing effects of music on the mind, the body, and the spirit. We all know the power of music, but in a world driven by entertainment and technology, it's amazing how quickly we forget. Music moves the emotions, the body, and can even move the world. It is one of the most miraculous healing tools, as music heightens the subconscious and lifts the human spirit.

It wasn't until after World War I that music was used as a therapy and established as a healthcare profession to help soldiers overcome mental anguish. By definition, Music Therapy falls into the category of Alternative Medicine, using music as a means to improve physical and emotional health. Clive Robbins, co-founder of the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University says, "At a nonverbal level, music activates our minds, integrates our attention, and seems to help regulate some body functions." Today, Music Therapy is the most popular form of Sound Therapy and has been scientifically proven to help treat countless conditions. Dr. Oliver Sacks, a New York neurologist famous for his book Awakenings, stated, "I regard Music Therapy as a tool of great power in many neurological disorders because of its unique capacity to organize and reorganize cerebral function where it has been damaged."

Music Therapy has proved beneficial in:
  • Autism in children

  • Aiding Depression, Grief, & Pain

  • Lowering Heart Rate and Blood Pressure and regulating Breathing, thus decreasing Stress & Anger

  • Relieving Anxiety before and after surgery

  • Relaxing neo-natal babies and children

  • Helping ease Arthritis

  • Uniting Alzheimer patients

  • Aiding Insomnia.

Throw out the pills and pop in a CD instead. Learn to feel the music, not just listen to it! We recommend the following for a bit of Music Therapy at home, at the office, or on the go:

From moving your energy to your feet, there's nothing like feeling your favorite beat! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Love,

Mary Kent
