Dance To The Beet!

"Dance is the hidden language of the soul." - Martha Graham

This week, The Weekly Beet reports on the incredible health benefits of dance therapy. Mary Kent shares her top 10 healthy reasons why everyone should dance to the "beet."

We all know about the flamenco, the cha-cha, and the waltz, but have you ever heard of the bharat natya, the djanger, or the bugaku? (Click here to discover the many different types of dance.) From belly dancing to ballet dancing, cultures around the world have used dance as a powerful tool for self-expression throughout history. Also used for centuries in religious rituals, to treat illnesses, for celebrations, and for just plain entertainment, there is obviously alot more to dancing than we might think! Unfortunately in the western world, most of us have forgotten the importance of dance. We say it’s time to put your cell phone aside and communicate through dance!

What most people don't realize is that dance is not just an expression of a particular culture, it is an incredible therapy that can be used to heal an individual by promoting personal growth, health, and well-being. Dance Therapy, founded by Marian Chace, is the therapeutic use of movement to improve the mental and physical state of an individual. The theory underlining Dance Therapy is that dance has the ability to reflect the inner state of the emotional body. In the 1940s, Chace used the movement of dance as an incredible tool for communication and emotional expression, which she applied to mentally and emotionally disturbed patients at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington D.C. Chace's work lead to the founding of the American Dance Therapy Association in 1966 and the recognition of Dance Therapy as an alternative healing practice.

Here are the top 10 reasons why we can't stop dancing. Dancing:

  1. Burns calories - 100 calories per 10 minutes

  2. Increases energy

  3. Reduces stress, fears, and anxieties

  4. Relieves anger and lifts the mood

  5. Helps prevent osteoporosis

  6. Enhances self-esteem and self-confidence

  7. Improves balance and coordination

  8. Lowers risk of heart disease and diabetes

  9. Increases circulation

  10. Improves memory

Luckily, it's easy to bring a bit of dance therapy into your own home. All you need is good music and the courage to move your body.

It's time to let go and dance. Have fun naturally! Don't miss a Beet. Stay tuned for next week.

Love,

Mary Kent
