This year, The Weekly Beet reports on the top 6 foods for the year 2006. Mary Kent makes a selection of the most nourishing, healthy foods, explaining why your New Year just can't start without them!

Here are the top 6 foods that made the cut:

Acai is a purple berry that grows wild in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. Known for its high amount of antioxidants, acai is now one of the top superfoods of the world. The antioxidant level of acai is higher than that of grapes and pomegranites! Acai contains calcium and fiber, making it a perfect food for osteoporosis and high cholesterol. Research is now looking at the healing benefits of acai for leukemia. Look for Bossa Nova, a new drink made of 100% acai fruit. It's totally unBEETable! Avocado. Despite what you may think, the avocado is indeed a fruit! It is filled with lots of healthy, monounsaturated fat, as well as vitamin E which are both great for the heart and the skin. Because the avocado also contains glutathione, it has strong anti-carcinogenic powers, as well as antioxidant ones! This fruit is also a rich source of potassium, fiber and folic acid, vitamin B-6, pantothenic acid, iron, copper, and magnesium. Cut an avocado in half and sprinkle sliced almonds on top. Barley. Barley is a great source of fiber and is known to strengthen the spleen and the pancreas. It is an excellent grain that regulates the stomach, fortifying the intestines and aiding in digestion. Eating barley can help reduce tumors and lower cholesterol. Start the day with a bowl of barley cereal, it will do wonders for your energy levels! For extra nutrients be on the look out for barley grass. Derived from the leaves that form before the grain, barley grass contains vitamins, minerals and proteins that are a perfect superfood addition to any diet! We are big fans of AIM's barley grass.

Flax. It's a seed, it's an oil, and its healing properties are pretty unBEETable! Flax is one of the richest sources of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Flax protects the body from cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. It is also effective against the inflammation of joints, in giving us glowing skin, and in helping heal constipation and hemmoroids. Sprinkle flax seeds over porridge, cereal, and yoghurt, or pour flax oil over salads and greens. Try it!

Kefir. Kefir, which means "feel good" in Turkish, is a cultured, enzyme-rich milk product filled with friendly micro-organisms that helps balance the digestive system. Similar to yoghurt in texture, kefir contains more minerals, more B Vitamins, and more protein. Our favorite brands are Helios and Lifeway. Look for kefir at the health food store. Parsley. Parsley is one of the best foods out there! It is an incredible source of nutrition, as it contains more vitamin C than citrus fruits and is one of the highest sources of vitamin A, chlorophyll, calcium, sodium, magnesium and iron. It also is extremely powerful in counteracting halitosis and aids in digestion. Parsley has been proven to strengthen the adrenal glands and benefits the optic and brain nerves. We are big fans of the Middle Eastern salad called tabouli. There is lots of parsley in tabouli. Sprinkle parsley, cook with parsley, juice it or even eat parsley raw! Whatever you do, use parsley everywhere you can.
